Semaglutide – A Game-changing, FDA-approved Weight Loss drug

On June 4th, 2021 the FDA approved a new drug treatment for Weight Loss. The article from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration noted: “Today’s approval offers adults with obesity or overweight a beneficial new treatment option to incorporate into a weight management program,” said John Sharretts, M.D., deputy director of the Division of Diabetes, Lipid Disorders, and Obesity in the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. “FDA remains committed to facilitating the development and approval of additional safe and effective therapies for adults with obesity or overweight.” This new treatment is beyond just promising, it is proven to assist in semaglutide weight loss effectively and safely. On average 70% of American adults are overweight or obese. The health risks associated with being overweight are tremendous. Even losing 5-10% of body weight through dieting and exercise and reduce risk of cardiovascular disease.

Semaglutide – What is it?

In simple terms, Semaglutide, Wegovy or Ozempic improve insulin resistance. This allows calories and fat to be burned, while improving energy. Semaglutide is a peptide that works by mimicking a hormone called glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1), which targets an area of the brain that regulates appetite and food intake. By controlling blood sugar spikes and lowering blood sugar, as well as reducing appetite and cravings, energy levels are more consistent. Semaglutide is administered by a subcutaneous injection, commonly dosed once weekly. Dosing may be increased after one month if needed.

Is it Safe? Does It Work?

The safety and effectiveness of Semaglutide have been studied in four 68-week trials. Three were randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled (including 16-week dose escalation) and one was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled withdrawal study in which patients receiving Semaglutide continued treatment or switched to placebo. In the four studies, more than 2,600 patients received Semaglutide for up to 68 weeks and more than 1,500 patients received a placebo. Semaglutide trial results showed overweight or obese adults receiving weekly Semaglutide had a medium weight loss of 14.9% at 68 weeks. In this same study, nearly 70% of participants were able to achieve a 10% weight loss threshold by taking Semaglutide. And 32% of participants lost at least 20% of their initial weight.

In other terms, 1 of 3 patients lose 20% of their body weight with the program. Another 1 in 2 lose 15% of their Body Weight! On average, Semaglutide alone can assist in losing 2-4 pounds a week.

Bottom line is — everyone agrees this therapy works wonders for weight loss!

What Are Your Responsibilities While Taking Semaglutide?

  • Participate in (at least) 3 weight-training sessions per week to maintain your lean muscle mass.

  • Eat a minimum of 0.6 to 1 gram per pound of ideal body weight each day

(ex: if your ideal body weight is 150 pounds, you need to consume 150 grams of protein each day).

  • Remove processed and packaged food, junk food, soda, candy & baked goods from your diet.

  • Drink 8 glasses of water a day.

Tirzepatide Is Also Available! What's the Difference?

Tirzepatide works by targeting the dual glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) and glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RA), making it the first weight loss medications to target two receptor agonists at once. Both  are incretin hormones, meaning they are released after food intake and stimulate insulin secretion.

Tirzepatide works by mimicking both these receptor agonists, in turn, signaling the pancreas to stop releasing insulin after food intake and alerting the liver to decrease glucose levels.

These processes slow down digestion, improve glycemic control and help people feel fuller for longer after eating meals which can all lead to body weight reduction and weight control.

This clinical trial showed that Tirzepatide resulted in a weight reduction of 15-20% of starting body weight for those taking Tirzepatide at 72 weeks, while those in the placebo group saw an average weight reduction of 3%.

When comparing Tirzepatide vs Semaglutide for weight loss, Tirzepatide resulted in more significant weight loss results than Semaglutide. This is likely due to Tirzepatide targeting both the GLP-1 & the GLP-1RA, while Semaglutide only targets the GLP-1 receptor.
